Erectile dysfunction
in males
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the persistent difficulty in getting or maintaining an erection firm enough for satisfactory sexual activity. It is a common health concern among men and can occur at any age, although it becomes more frequent with increasing age. Occasional difficulty with erections may happen because of stress, tiredness or other temporary factors and does not always indicate a medical problem. However, repeated or persistent erectile difficulties deserve proper evaluation. Many men hesitate to discuss this condition because of embarrassment, but erectile dysfunction is a recognised medical problem, and effective treatments are available for many patients.
Erectile dysfunction is not always caused by low testosterone or ageing. Normal erections depend on healthy blood vessels, nerves, hormones and psychological wellbeing. Diabetes is an important cause of erectile dysfunction, particularly when blood sugar has remained poorly controlled for several years. High blood sugar can damage the nerves and blood vessels involved in erections. Other common contributing factors include obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, cardiovascular disease, certain medicines, stress, anxiety and depression. Hormonal disorders such as testosterone deficiency (male hypogonadism), high prolactin levels, pituitary disorders and thyroid dysfunction can also contribute to sexual difficulties. In some men, several factors may be present together.
One important fact is that erectile dysfunction may sometimes be an early warning sign of underlying heart or blood vessel disease. The blood vessels supplying the penis are relatively small, so problems with vascular health may become noticeable as erectile difficulties even before other cardiovascular symptoms appear. This is particularly relevant in men with diabetes, obesity, hypertension or a family history of heart disease. Erectile dysfunction can also occur in young men, and it should not automatically be attributed to stress or psychological problems. Similarly, not every man with erectile dysfunction has low testosterone. A proper assessment helps identify the actual cause and avoid unnecessary hormonal treatment.
Finding the underlying cause helps determine the most appropriate treatment. Evaluation may include a detailed medical and sexual history, review of medicines, assessment of blood pressure and metabolic health, and selected blood tests such as blood glucose, HbA1c, lipid profile and early-morning testosterone. Additional tests for prolactin, thyroid function or other hormones may be needed in selected patients. Treatment may involve better diabetes control, weight management, regular exercise, correction of hormonal abnormalities, counselling or medicines that improve erections. Testosterone treatment is appropriate only for selected men with confirmed testosterone deficiency and is not routinely required for all patients with erectile dysfunction. Men planning to have children should also know that external testosterone treatment can reduce sperm production.
With appropriate evaluation and individualised management, many men can experience meaningful improvement in sexual function and overall wellbeing. Dr. Rajesh Moganti (MD, DM Endocrinology) provides evaluation and treatment of diabetes-related erectile dysfunction, testosterone deficiency, male hormonal disorders and other endocrine causes of sexual dysfunction at our Rajahmundry and Tanuku centres. Consultations are conducted with sensitivity, professionalism and respect for patient privacy.
What we treat
Diabetes & metabolic-related erectile dysfunction
Evaluation and management of erectile dysfunction associated with diabetes, obesity, insulin resistance, hypertension and abnormal cholesterol levels. Assessment focuses on metabolic health, blood vessel function, nerve-related problems and cardiovascular risk.
Low testosterone & hormonal disorders
Assessment of male hypogonadism (testosterone deficiency), high prolactin, pituitary disorders and thyroid conditions associated with erectile difficulties, reduced sexual desire and other symptoms. Treatment is based on confirmed hormonal abnormalities and individual reproductive goals.
Erectile dysfunction in young & older men
Evaluation of persistent erectile difficulties in men of different ages, including medication-related, vascular and psychological contributing factors. Management may include lifestyle changes, appropriate medicines, counselling and referral for specialised urological care when needed.

How your care works
- Assessment
A detailed and respectful discussion of sexual symptoms, medical history, medicines and lifestyle factors. Evaluation may include blood pressure, blood sugar, HbA1c, lipid profile and morning testosterone, with additional hormonal tests when indicated. - Personal treatment plan
Treatment is tailored to the underlying cause and may include improved diabetes control, weight management, physical activity, correction of hormonal deficiencies, appropriate erectile dysfunction medicines and psychosexual support. Specialist referral is arranged when necessary. - Regular follow-up
Monitoring improvement in sexual function, metabolic health, hormone levels when relevant and response to treatment. Follow-up also addresses medicine safety, cardiovascular risk and longer-term hormonal and reproductive health.
